Seamoss vs. Bladderwrack: Which Sea Plant Do You Actually Need?

Two different sea plants. Two different jobs. Here's how to tell which one belongs in your routine — from a nurse's chair.

This question comes up in my DMs every week. "Do I take the seamoss or the bladderwrack? Both? Which first?" Short answer: they do different work. Most people do best with both. If you have to pick, here's how the two line up with what you're actually reaching for.

01

What each one is

Seamoss

Chondrus crispus. A red algae from the North Atlantic. My father called it the ocean's mineral vault — broad-spectrum.

Bladderwrack

Fucus vesiculosus. A brown seaweed from cold-water shores. Targeted iodine and fucoidan.

Both are on the Celebrities of the Garden list. They aren't competitors — they're companions.

02

The mineral profile comparison

Seamoss is broad-spectrum: calcium, magnesium, potassium, sulfur, iron, zinc, iodine (less than bladderwrack), plus a long list of trace minerals. This is where the "92 essential minerals" phrase on our jars comes from.

Bladderwrack is targeted. Its iodine content is 10–20× what you'd find in seamoss. It also carries fucoidan, alginate, and fucoxanthin.

Dr. Sebi taught
"The ocean gave us the mineral vault. Every element the body recognizes lives in the sea plants."
— Dr. Alfredo Bowman, historical teaching
03

Who should reach for which

Seamoss alone if you're just starting, want the widest-spectrum option, or prefer jelly for smoothies. Also the right first move if you have thyroid concerns.

Bladderwrack alone if you've been on seamoss and want to layer in something targeted — with your provider's OK on the iodine.

Both if you want broad-spectrum minerals plus targeted iodine in one capsule. That's our Seamoss & Bladderwrack Capsules — our top SKU.

04

The thyroid conversation

If you have any thyroid condition or a history of thyroid surgery — talk to your provider before adding bladderwrack. Iodine has real effects on thyroid function; adding it to a body already on thyroid medication changes how that medication works.

Same conversation if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Iodine needs shift during pregnancy.

I'm not telling you not to take bladderwrack. I'm telling you to make it a three-way conversation between you, your provider, and this framework.
05

Jelly or capsules

Jelly. Best if you cook. Smoothies, oatmeal, iced tea. Refrigerated shelf life 3–4 weeks. A jar of Sebis Daughters Seamoss Jelly Original Formula with a Sebi's Daughters logo featuring a portrait of Dr. Sebi.

Capsules. Best if you travel, have kids, or work long shifts (this one is me). Room-temp shelf life. Two capsules with water and you're done.Organic Seamoss and Bladderwrack - 30-Day Capsules

Same work, different clothes. Pick the one you'll actually take.
