The Perception Magazine Feature
When Gloria Peebles of Perception Magazine reached out to talk about my journey, I knew the conversation wouldn’t be about products or business metrics. It would be about food. About what we put in our bodies every day without questioning it. About the path that took me from conventional nursing to building a company rooted in my father’s teachings — and why that path matters now more than ever.
The interview covered my background as a licensed healthcare provider and certified health nutritionist, my transition to holistic wellness coaching, and the framework behind Sebi’s Daughters. But the thread running through all of it was the same one my father wove for decades: the body knows how to maintain itself when you give it what it actually needs. Whole foods. Clean water. Plants from the earth, not products from a factory.
This post expands on what I shared with Perception Magazine — the philosophy, the framework, and the practical steps behind everything I teach. If you came here from the article, welcome. If you found this post on your own, even better. Either way, pull up a chair.
My Herbalist Journey
I spent years in conventional healthcare. I worked as a nurse, watching patients cycle through the same conditions, the same prescriptions, the same conversations. And I kept coming back to the same question: what if there was a way to support the body before it got to that point? Not after. Before.
That question led me to study nutrition. I earned my certifications in health nutrition and wellness coaching. I immersed myself in herbalism — the ancient practice of using plants and plant extracts for wellness. And I kept circling back to the work my father had been doing for decades before I was ready to see it clearly.
The transition wasn’t overnight. It was a gradual awakening — fueled by my own wellness journey, relentless research, and a growing understanding that the clinical world and the natural world weren’t as far apart as I’d been taught. My dual background — clinical nursing and holistic nutrition — lets me understand both the science of the body and the wisdom of nature. I bridge those two worlds every day for the people I serve.
“The body has an incredible ability to take care of itself when given the right tools — and those tools are found in nature.”— Kellie Bowman, Perception Magazine
Herbalism gave me the missing piece. Plants like burdock root, sarsaparilla, elderberry, and Sea Moss aren’t trends. They’re the oldest wellness tools on the planet. My father studied their mineral content, their alkaline properties, how they work together to nourish the body at the cellular level. I took that knowledge, combined it with my clinical training, and built a practice — and eventually a company — around it.
Burdock Root
A traditional blood-supporting herb and liver tonic that promotes the body’s natural cleansing pathways.
Sarsaparilla
Supports hormonal balance and promotes healthy skin. Used in traditional herbalism for centuries.
Elderberry
Naturally supports immune function. One of the most widely studied berries in traditional wellness.
Bladderwrack
Rich in iodine. Supports thyroid function and metabolic rhythm alongside Sea Moss.
Chaparral
A potent antioxidant and cellular cleanser used in traditional herbalism across generations.
Soursop Leaf
Studied for its anti-inflammatory properties. Supports the immune system and promotes cellular wellness.
I didn’t leave nursing because I stopped believing in science. I left because I started believing in the science of plants. The two aren’t opposites. They’re partners. And the sooner we understand that, the better off we’ll all be.
Dr. Sebi’s Legacy and the Alkaline Framework
My father, Dr. Sebi — born Alfredo Darrington Bowman in the village of Ilanga, Honduras, in 1933 — spent over thirty years studying the relationship between what we eat and how our bodies function. He wasn’t born into medicine. He was self-taught. He learned from the land, from the elders, from the plants themselves. And what he discovered changed how millions of people think about food and wellness.
Dr. Sebi developed a methodology rooted in one principle: the body is electrical, and it needs minerals to conduct that electricity. When you flood the body with processed food, GMOs, and sugars, you create an acidic internal environment where the body can’t maintain itself the way it was designed. His answer wasn’t a prescription. It was the plate. Whole, unprocessed, mineral-rich foods — what he called the Celebrities of the Garden — paired with his original Sea Moss formula, CMOS, which provides 92 of the 102 minerals the body needs.
At the heart of this methodology is what he called the African Bio-Mineral Balance — a nutritional framework that positions alkaline whole foods as the cornerstone of cellular wellness. The human body functions best at a slightly alkaline blood pH of 7.35 to 7.45. When we overload it with processed food, refined sugars, and synthetic ingredients, we push that internal environment in the wrong direction. The alkaline framework brings it back: fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, herbal teas and spring water, minimally processed whole foods, and the complete avoidance of refined sugars, processed food, and GMOs.
In 1987, Dr. Sebi was taken to the New York Supreme Court. The attorney general charged him with practicing medicine without a license and making false claims. He was told to bring one witness for each condition he claimed to have addressed through nutrition. He brought over seventy. The court acquitted him on all counts. That case put Dr. Sebi’s name in front of the world.
“If nature didn’t make it, don’t take it.”— Dr. Sebi (Alfredo Darrington Bowman, 1933–2016)
After the trial, Dr. Sebi built the Usha Research Institute in La Ceiba, Honduras. People traveled from around the world to stay at Usha and learn his approach to plant-based nutrition. He didn’t advertise. Word spread because people felt different after following his guidance. They told their families. Their families told their neighbors. That’s how a movement grows — not through marketing, but through results people can feel in their own bodies.
Dr. Sebi transitioned on August 6, 2016, in Honduras. But his impact didn’t stop. If anything, the interest in his work has grown stronger every year since. His teachings on alkaline nutrition, mineral balance, and whole foods have reached a new generation — people who are questioning what’s on their plates, reading labels for the first time, and choosing farmers markets over fast food. That’s his legacy in action. And it’s the foundation of everything I do at Sebi’s Daughters.
The Usha Research Institute
Founded by Dr. Sebi in La Ceiba, Honduras. A destination where people from around the world came to learn his plant-based, mineral-rich approach to nutrition and wellness.
The 1987 Court Case
Acquitted on all charges in New York Supreme Court after presenting over 70 witnesses. The case brought Dr. Sebi’s methodology to national attention.
CMOS — The Sea Moss Formula
Dr. Sebi’s original Sea Moss blend, developed over decades of research. Provides 92 of the 102 minerals the human body needs for whole-body mineral balance.
A Global Movement
From Honduras to Harlem to Atlanta — Dr. Sebi’s teachings on alkaline living have reached millions worldwide. His family continues his mission through education and community.
Plant-Based Benefits You Can Feel
One of the most compelling parts of this work is how quickly people notice the difference when they change what’s on their plate. The benefits I advocate for aren’t theoretical. They’re what people describe in their own words — in my inbox, at our events, and in the conversations that happen after someone commits to whole plant foods for even a few weeks.
More Consistent Energy
Without the crashes that come from processed sugar and caffeine. When you feed your cells with mineral-rich whole foods, your energy doesn’t spike and crash — it sustains.
Better Digestion
Whole plant foods are naturally high in dietary fiber, which supports gut wellness and promotes regularity. A well-nourished gut is foundational to how you feel every day.
Clearer Skin
When you stop putting inflammatory food in, the body starts showing it on the outside. Your skin is a mirror of what’s happening inside.
Improved Mental Clarity
Many people report sharper focus and better mood within the first few weeks of eating whole plant foods — largely because the body is finally getting what it needs.
Natural Weight Management
Plant-based meals are nutrient-dense and satisfying without excess calories. You eat to nourish, not to count. Your body finds its own balance.
Hormonal Support
Certain herbs and plant foods contain compounds that promote hormonal balance — particularly supportive for women navigating different stages of life. Our Women’s Wellness guide goes deeper.
Whole-Body Nourishment
Herbs like burdock root, elderberry, and Sea Moss support the liver, immune system, and mineral balance at the deepest cellular level. They nourish what food alone sometimes can’t reach.
Start your alkaline journey by replacing one meal per day with a plant-based alternative — a green smoothie with leafy greens, cucumber, and alkaline fruits like berries or watermelon. One meal. That’s all it takes to begin shifting the internal environment.
The Celebrities of the Garden
Not all plant-based foods are created equal. I draw a clear line between processed vegan products — which can still be inflammatory and nutrient-poor — and true whole plant foods. Foods as close to their natural state as possible, unrefined, and free from synthetic additives. My father called them the Celebrities of the Garden. He hand-selected them based on their mineral content, their alkaline properties, and their ability to nourish the body at the cellular level.
Okra
Rich in fiber, vitamin C, and folate. Supports digestive wellness and helps maintain healthy function throughout the body.
Kale & Leafy Greens
Watercress, dandelion greens, amaranth greens. Packed with chlorophyll, iron, and alkaline minerals. The foundation of any alkaline plate.
Avocado
Healthy fats that support brain function, skin health, and mineral absorption. One of the most versatile foods in any kitchen.
Green Bell Peppers
High in vitamin C and antioxidants. Things you can prepare on a daily basis without overthinking it.
Burro Bananas
Not the hybrid Cavendish banana. The original Burro banana — smaller, slightly tangy, and far richer in potassium and iron.
Cucumber & Zucchini
Hydrating, alkaline, and easy to work into any meal. Smoothies, salads, or just sliced with a squeeze of key lime.
Building a meal around whole plant foods is simpler than most people expect. Start with greens as the base — salads, smoothies, or lightly sauteed sides. Add a plant protein like hemp seeds, garbanzos, or quinoa. Include healthy fats — walnuts or cold-pressed olive oil. Hydrate with spring water, herbal teas, or coconut water. Finish with whole fruit instead of processed sweets.
For a complete meal-by-meal framework with twelve weeks of menus and ten recipes, our 90-Day Alkaline Meal Plan lays it all out — or download the free printable PDF and put it on your fridge.
“I’m not interested in you buying the products — I’m interested in you educating yourself about what you eat.”— Kellie Bowman, Perception Magazine
Sea Moss and the Mineral Foundation
The soil that grows most of our food has been depleted. Decades of industrial farming have pulled minerals out of the earth faster than nature can restore them. The produce in a grocery store today contains measurably fewer minerals than the same produce contained fifty years ago. Sea plants don’t have this problem. The ocean is the original mineral vault — it holds every element the human body recognizes.
Sea Moss alone carries 92 of the 102 minerals the body uses — including iodine for thyroid support, iron for oxygen transport, zinc for immune function, magnesium for muscle and nerve wellness, potassium for heart rhythm, and calcium for bone density. My father called sea plants the foundation of mineral nutrition. Not a supplement. Not a booster. The foundation. You build the food on top of it. You build the herbs on top of it. You build the lifestyle on top of it.
His original formula — CMOS — was developed over decades of research. Dr. Sebi is the architect of the CMOS movement, and his formula remains the standard that everything else in the Sea Moss space is measured against.
For the full mineral breakdown — what each mineral does, how Sea Moss delivers it, and why sourcing matters — our Power of Seamoss page goes deeper than this section has room for. If you’re comparing Sea Moss to bladderwrack and wondering which one you need, our Seamoss vs. Bladderwrack guide walks through the differences side by side.

How to Start Your Journey Today
Nobody’s asking you to throw everything out tomorrow. My father didn’t build his knowledge overnight. He studied for decades. So give yourself grace, but give yourself a start. Here’s where I recommend you begin:
Visit Your Local Farmers Market
Your farmers markets are formidable alternatives to the grocery store. The produce is fresher, often grown without GMOs, and you’re supporting your community at the same time.
Read Every Label
If you can’t pronounce what’s in it, your body can’t use it. Start paying attention to ingredients before you pay attention to calories. The ingredient list tells you everything.
Add One Green Meal a Day
Replace one meal with something from the Celebrities of the Garden list. A green smoothie. A big salad with avocado and cucumber. A bowl of sauteed okra with quinoa. One meal. That’s all.
Build Your Mineral Foundation
Add a Sea Moss blend to your morning routine. Let the 92 minerals do what they do — support your thyroid, your joints, your gut, your energy. Let the body do what it already knows how to do.
Educate Before You Buy
Learn how to eat first. The products come second. I say it plainly: “If you don’t buy any of our products, you still need to know how to eat.” That’s the lesson Dr. Sebi taught his family — education first, always.
For a printable weekly framework with recipes, our 7-Day Alkaline Meal Prep guide is the simplest place to start. And our Dr. Sebi Grocery List gives you the complete shopping list. If you want the full twelve-week structure, the 90-Day Alkaline Meal Plan puts it all together.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a plant-based diet and a vegan diet?
A plant-based diet focuses on consuming whole plant foods in their most natural, unprocessed form. A vegan diet simply excludes all animal products but may still include highly processed foods. I emphasize quality — choosing whole, alkaline-forming plants over processed vegan alternatives.
What plant-based benefits do beginners notice first?
Most people report improved digestion, increased energy, clearer skin, and better sleep within the first two to four weeks. Longer-term benefits include a greater sense of overall wellness, improved mood, and more consistent energy throughout the day.
What herbs does Kellie recommend for beginners?
Start with accessible, gentle herbs: elderberry for immune support, burdock root for liver nourishment, and Sea Moss for mineral replenishment. These can be taken as teas, tinctures, or gel supplements and pair naturally with an alkaline diet. Our Approved Herbs guide lists them all by function.
Who was Dr. Sebi?
Dr. Sebi, born Alfredo Darrington Bowman in 1933 in Honduras, was a self-taught herbalist and naturalist who spent over thirty years studying the relationship between nutrition and wellness. He founded the Usha Research Institute in La Ceiba, Honduras, developed the CMOS Sea Moss formula, and was acquitted in a landmark 1987 New York Supreme Court case. He transitioned on August 6, 2016.
How long does it take to notice a difference on an alkaline, plant-based diet?
Most people begin noticing improvements in energy and digestion within one to two weeks. More meaningful changes — sustained energy, clearer thinking, improved sleep, and a deeper sense of wellness — typically emerge within four to twelve weeks of consistent practice.
